A Quick Guide to the Hermetic Seal

A Quick Guide to the Hermetic Seal

A hermetic seal is generally a packaging or closure that makes an object airtight. This includes any container or connector that was designed to prevent air, gas, or moisture from moving through the object. The airtight seal can also prevent contaminates and chemicals from penetrating the seal. Originally used to create glass containers that were completely airtight, the modern hermetic seal manufacturer can now include plastics, metals, and ceramics in their designs.

Finishes for Hermetic Seals

Due to the special nature of the seal, only specific materials can be used as plating options for hermetic type seals. They include:

  • Tin
  • Silver
  • Gold
  • Electrolytic
  • Electroless NI

Glass Hermetic Seals

Glass-to-metal hermetic seals can be effectively used with objects that have harsh changes in pressure, humidity, or temperature. The fused seals can be used with glass insulators to provide a secure bond and corrosion resistant surface.

Compressions Hermetic Seals

Frequently used for high pressure extreme applications, the compression seal can withstand up to 14,000 PSI and up to 400 degrees centigrade. This type of seal was designed to withstand thermal contraction and expansion because the stainless-steel contracts into the glass as it solidifies creating a tight seal.

Future Hermetic Seals

The modern hermetic seal has allowed the development of many specialized electronic devices. As the need for advanced compression seals continues to grow, new designs with high-reliability can surely be expected.
